Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut, with a population of 4,546. The citizens are joined by at least 6,000 sled dogs, which means that Ilulissat is somewhat of a Mecca for dogsledding.
It is also the birthplace of Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933), the father of Eskimology. Rasmussen was the first man to cross the Northwest Passage via dog sled.
Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn, is a town in the Qaasuitsup municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 200 km (120 mi) north of the Arctic Circle.
In direct translation, Ilulissat is the Kalaallisut word “Icebergs”.
The picturesque Ilulissat Icefjord has made Ilulissat Greenland’s most popular tourist destination and tourism is now the town’s principal industry.
The Ilulissat Icefjord (Kalaallisut: Ilulissat Kangerlua) southeast of Ilulissat was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
